Originally Carn's focus had been concentrated on war fighting. In those early years a Carn warrior caught away from the safety or the unit usually didn't last long in single combat. As the years passed individual fighting skills increased giving rise to the idea of having a house champion. In the summer of 2002 we held our first house tourney with only the heavies competing. The following year the Rapier Tourney was added and in 2005 the combat missile tourney made its debut. The position of Iron Dog was created in 2006 for the overall champion

Heavy Champion: Thug

The best heavy fighter in a mercenary house like Carn should have knuckles that drag the ground and not to many brains to get in the way. So to reflect those attributes Carn choose to name our heavy champion “ "The Thug”. Their duties are to stand around an look menicing usualy with a large stick in their hands and act as ad hoc balif for clan membership meetings.

Fencers and opera divas like attention! Being a mercenary doesn’t seem to diminish the need for applause for even the most deadly of rapier fighters, hence the title “Bravo”. Second in importance in the hierarchy for fencers is, yep you guessed it is wardrobe. So if you can’t fight good, might as well look good.

Every army needs someone who can reach out on the war field and say hello in that special way. There is nothing that says lay down and stop bothering my friends like a fiberglass shaft traveling at high speed hitting you in the armpit. So the “Sniper” was born.

Since the SCA and Carn cover many diverse forms of combat it was decided that an overall champion would be named for the tournament beginning in 2006. The Iron Dog is presented to the warrior with the best all around placement in on the three martial forms
